30-Day Devotional for Loki: Day Seven

Question: What are Loki’s names and epithets?

Like most of the Norse gods, Loki has many names. It is through naming the gods, after all, that we invite them to ritual and into our lives. Here is a short list of some of Loki’s names:

Lodur – the god who helped create the world and gave flesh and spirit to humans.

Loptr, aka Skytreader

Flamehair – due to the redness of his hair

Scarlip – due to having his lips sewn shut after tricking the dwarves out of taking his head

Worldbreaker – his role during Ragnarok

Mother of Monsters – due to his children Hel, Jormungand, Fenrir, and the trolls

Bound God – once he is bound in punishment by the other gods

There are many other names, and there is a great post here that lists a greater number of Loki’s names. With that amazing list, crafting invitations for Loki to come to a blot or other ritual is much easier.

After all, the more someone is named, the more likely they are to appear.
